Lightest cars

The cheapest, most simple and lightest car below compact and sub-compact hatchback used to be the classic microcar from 1950s 1960s and 1970s.

One or two occupants, tiny twin cylinder motorcycle engine, no power steering, air conditioning or any non-essentials.

Those type of cars died off after stricter crash testing regulations were introduced in late 1980s, and even sub-compacts have grown in size and weight every year since.

Few modern sportscars still remain in the rarefied sub 1000 kg (2200 lb) class and most of the cars in this list are well over 40 years old.
